Data Erasure and Compliance

Certified Data Erasure to NIST 800-88 Standards

Permanent, verifiable data destruction with complete documentation for compliance records.

Why Proper Data Erasure Matters

Simply deleting files or formatting drives does not remove data. Residual information remains recoverable using readily available tools. For organisations handling sensitive data, this creates significant compliance and reputational risk.

Certified data erasure overwrites every sector of a storage device using verified patterns, making data permanently unrecoverable. Each erasure is validated and documented with an individual certificate for client’s records.

Risks of Improper Disposal

  • Data breaches from recovered drives
  • Australian Privacy Act violations
  • GDPR penalties for multinational organisations
  • Reputational damage and loss of customer trust
  • Industry specific compliance failures

Our Erasure Standards

We apply internationally recognised data sanitisation standards appropriate to security requirements.

NIST 800-88 Clear

Logical techniques that sanitise data in all user addressable storage locations. Suitable for assets being redeployed within the organisation or sold externally.

NIST 800-88 Purge

Physical or logical electronic erasure that render data recovery unfeasible using state of the art laboratory techniques. Required for assets leaving organisational control.

NIST 800-88 Destroy

Physical destruction rendering the media incapable of storing data. Used for highly classified data or when media cannot be sanitised electronically.

The Erasure Process

Every device follows a documented process with verification at each stage.

1

Intake

Asset received and logged with serial number and condition

2

Verification

Drive health checked and erasure method selected

3

Erasure

Certified software applies selected sanitisation method

4

Validation

Automated verification confirms complete data removal

5

Certificate

Individual certificate generated with full audit details

Certificate of Data Erasure

Every device receives an individual certificate documenting the erasure process. Certificates are generated automatically by our certified software and cannot be modified.

Certificates are delivered electronically and can be accessed through client portal. Bulk exports are available for organisations with large asset volumes.

Certificate Includes

  • Device serial number and model
  • Drive serial number and capacity
  • Erasure method applied
  • Erasure start and completion time
  • Verification status and result
  • Technician identification
  • Tamper evident certificate number

Compliance Coverage

Our data erasure processes support compliance with Australian and international data protection requirements.

Australian Privacy Act

APP 11 security requirements for personal information disposal.

GDPR

European data protection for multinational organisations.

APRA CPS 234

Information security for APRA regulated financial entities.

Healthcare Standards

RACGP and healthcare data security requirements

Physical Destruction Services

When electronic erasure is not possible or not appropriate, we provide certified physical destruction. This applies to failed drives, highly classified data, or regulatory requirements mandating the need for physical destruction.

Destruction is performed at our facility with video documentation available on request. You receive a Certificate of Destruction with photographic evidence.

Destruction Methods

  • Hard drive shredding to 25mm particles
  • SSD and flash media destruction
  • Degaussing for magnetic media
  • Mobile device destruction
  • Tape and optical media destruction

Frequently Asked Questions

Our certified software performs automated verification after each erasure, reading every sector of the drive to confirm the overwrite pattern was successfully applied. This verification is recorded in the certificate. The erasure software is independently audited and certified for compliance with NIST 800-88 standards.

Drives that fail during the erasure process or cannot be verified are automatically flagged for physical destruction. You receive a Certificate of Destruction instead of a Certificate of Erasure. This ensures complete data security regardless of drive condition.

Yes. Our software supports secure erasure of solid state drives using manufacturer specific secure erase commands and cryptographic erasure methods as defined in NIST 800-88. This addresses the unique architecture of flash storage to ensure complete data removal.

Certificates are retained in our secure system for seven years. You can access your certificates at any time through your client portal. We recommend downloading and storing certificates in your own compliance records immediately after processing.
